About Lions International
Lions Clubs International (LCI) is the world's largest service organization, founded in 1917 by Melvin Jones with a simple yet powerful motto: We Serve. With over 1.4 million members in more than 200 countries and territories, Lions are united in their mission to meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace, and foster international understanding.
Lions clubs address urgent global and local challenges through service in eight core areas: vision, hunger, the environment, childhood cancer, youth, disaster relief, diabetes, and broader humanitarian efforts. In response to evolving needs, Lions also lead special initiatives supporting mental health, disaster recovery, and global programs like Sight for Kids.
At the heart of Lions' global impact is Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), the charitable arm of Lions International. LCIF empowers Lions through grant funding for large-scale projects in disaster response, health services, and long-term development. Since 1968, LCIF has awarded over $1.3 billion in grants.
Every Lions club is autonomous yet connected to a global movement of service-minded individuals. With elected leaders and inclusive membership options, Lions International ensures people of all ages and backgrounds can contribute to positive change. Together, we serve locally and impact globally.

A Certified Guiding Lion and Qualified Trainer, he brings strategic vision and measured excellence to his role as District Governor of Lions International District 306 D1 for 2026–2027.

Our Story
History of Lionism in Sri Lanka
The philosophy of Lionism was introduced to Sri Lanka on 1 April 1958 through the extension of a Lions Club from South Indian District 304. The first club established was the Lions Club of Colombo, later renamed the Lions Club of Colombo Host. This historic milestone marked the beginning of one of Sri Lanka’s most influential voluntary service movements.
As Lionism expanded rapidly beyond Colombo, new clubs were established across the island. Recognizing this remarkable growth, Lions Clubs International granted Sri Lanka Provincial District status as District 306, under the leadership of the country's first District Governor, the late Lion K. Satchithananda.
Over the decades, Lionism in Sri Lanka has continued to grow in membership, leadership, and community service, producing internationally recognized leaders while expanding its administrative structure to better serve communities throughout the country.
Sri Lankan Milestones
- 1958
Lionism Arrives in Sri Lanka
- Lionism was introduced to Sri Lanka on 1 April 1958.
- The first club established was the Lions Club of Colombo, later renamed the Lions Club of Colombo Host.
- The club was sponsored by South Indian District 304 under the leadership of Lion K. Satchithananda.
- 1966
Formation of Provincial District 306
- Sri Lanka was granted Provincial District 306 status.
- The District was formed with six Lions Clubs, providing a formal administrative structure for the country's growing Lions movement.
- 1969
First Leo Club in Sri Lanka
- The Leo Club of Wattala was established as Sri Lanka's first Leo Club, laying the foundation for youth leadership and volunteerism.
- 1972
Conversion to District 306
- Provincial District 306 was officially converted into District 306, reflecting the continued expansion of Lionism throughout the country.
- 1978
Birth of Multiple District 306
- To accommodate rapid growth, District 306 was divided into District 306A and District 306B, creating Multiple District 306.
- Lion Mahendra Amarasuriya became the first District Governor of District 306A.
- The late PDG Manoharan became the first District Governor of District 306B.
- 1981–1983
Sri Lanka's First International Director
- Lion Chuck Wijenathan became Sri Lanka's first Lion to serve on the International Board of Directors of Lions Clubs International, representing the country during the 1981–1983 term.
- 1989
Formation of District 306C
- Continued growth resulted in the formation of District 306C under the leadership of the late PDG Lion Perera.
- The year also marked the inaugural Lions Peace Poster Contest in Sri Lanka.
- 1991
Expansion of Provincial District 306
- Provincial District 306 expanded with the formation of six additional clubs, strengthening Lions' presence across the country.
- 1998
Three-District Structure
- Multiple District 306 was re-demarcated into three sub-districts: District 306A, District 306B and District 306C.
- 2003
International Director
- Lion Asoka Gunasekara PMJF was elected as an International Director, becoming one of Sri Lanka's distinguished representatives on the International Board.
- 2004/2005
Six-District Structure
- Multiple District 306 was restructured into six districts: 306A1, 306A2, 306B1, 306B2, 306C1 and 306C2.
- District 306C2 was officially established.
- Lion K. D. K. Wijenayake became the first District Governor of District 306C2.
- The LCIF SightFirst II Campaign was launched in Sri Lanka.
- 2007
Sri Lanka's First International President
- Lion Mahendra Amarasuriya PMJF was elected International President of Lions Clubs International, becoming the first Sri Lankan and the first South Asian to hold the organization’s highest office.
- 2011
International Director
- Lion Sunil Watawala PMJF was elected as an International Director, continuing Sri Lanka's strong international representation.
- 2022
International Director
- Lion Mahash Pasqual PMJF was elected as an International Director, further strengthening Sri Lanka's leadership on the global Lions stage.
- 2025/2026
Formation of Twelve Districts
- Responding to unprecedented growth, Multiple District 306 was restructured from six districts into twelve districts: 306 D1, D2, D3, D4, D5, D6, D7, D8, D9, D10, D11 and D12.
A Legacy of Service
From the establishment of a single Lions Club in 1958, Lionism in Sri Lanka has grown into one of the most active and respected Multiple Districts in the world. The country has proudly produced one Past International President and four Past International Directors, while thousands of Lions and Leos continue to transform lives through humanitarian service, leadership, and community development. Today, Multiple District 306 stands as a vibrant network of twelve districts, united by the Lions motto “We Serve”, and committed to making a lasting impact across Sri Lanka.
