Who We Are
About Us
About Lions International
Lions Clubs International (LCI) is the world's largest service organization, founded in 1917 by Melvin Jones with a simple yet powerful motto: We Serve. With over 1.4 million members in more than 200 countries and territories, Lions are united in their mission to meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace, and foster international understanding.
Lions clubs address urgent global and local challenges through service in eight core areas: vision, hunger, the environment, childhood cancer, youth, disaster relief, diabetes, and broader humanitarian efforts. In response to evolving needs, Lions also lead special initiatives supporting mental health, disaster recovery, and global programs like Sight for Kids.
At the heart of Lions' global impact is Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), the charitable arm of Lions International. LCIF empowers Lions through grant funding for large-scale projects in disaster response, health services, and long-term development. Since 1968, LCIF has awarded over $1.3 billion in grants.
Every Lions club is autonomous yet connected to a global movement of service-minded individuals. With elected leaders and inclusive membership options, Lions International ensures people of all ages and backgrounds can contribute to positive change. Together, we serve locally and impact globally.

Our Story
History of Lionism in Sri Lanka
The International Philosophy of Lionism was introduced to Sri Lanka on the 1st of April 1958 as a club extension from the South Indian District of 304. The first club was named the Lions Club of Colombo, later re-named the Lions Club of Colombo Host. With the growth of Lionism, Provincial District status was subsequently granted as District 306, under the stewardship of Sri Lanka's first District Governor - the late Lion K. Satchithananda.
As Lionism extended its service activities outside Colombo, new clubs were formed rapidly. To better fulfil both administrative and service requirements, District 306 was divided in 1978 into two Districts - 306 A and 306 B. With this division, Sri Lanka's Multiple District 306 was born, and the two sub-districts were able to serve more effectively.
With the passage of time, District 306 A & B expanded their networks steadily. For administrative purposes, redistricting was once again necessary, and in 1998 Multiple District 306 was re-demarcated into three sub-districts - 306 A, B & C.
Due to the continued growth of Lionism in Sri Lanka, another redistricting programme was carried out in 2004/2005, re-demarcating the Multiple District into six sub-districts - 306 A1 & A2, B1 & B2, and C1 & C2. This small but dynamic Multiple District is honoured with four Past International Directors and Past International President Lion Mahinda Amarasuriya.
