Preserving Heritage and Spreading Joy: District 306 D1 Brings Communities Together for Sinhala and Tamil New Year Celebrations
Event Date

The sweet aroma of Kevum and Kokis filled the air as Lions Clubs International District 306 D1 hosted its annual Avurudu Ussawaya (New Year Festival). Organized to foster deep community harmony and preserve Sri Lanka's rich cultural heritage, the event brought together Lions, Leos, and families from diverse neighborhoods to celebrate the dawn of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year as one large family.

The festival grounds came alive with vibrant traditional decorations and the rhythmic beating of the Raban. Attendees clad in bright, auspicious New Year colors participated enthusiastically in a long lineup of time-honored Avurudu Games (Avurudu Kreedā). From the competitive thrill of the sack race (Goni Reesa) and pillow fighting (Kotta Pora) to the precision of breaking the water pot blindfolded (Kana Mutti Bindeema), laughter and community spirit took center stage.

"Avurudu is a time for renewal, forgiveness, and absolute unity. Our goal as Lions is to strengthen community bonds. Seeing neighbors from all backgrounds smiling, sharing traditional milk rice (Kiribath), and competing together reminds us of the beautiful cultural tapestry we serve." - Project Organizing Committee Chairman
